One Irrigation Schedule Rarely Fits Every Plant

Trees, shrubs and groundcovers can share the same landscape, but they do not always need water at the same rate, depth or frequency. When unlike plants are placed on one irrigation zone, the controller can only run one schedule. That often means one group receives more water than it needs while another is watered too shallowly.

Trees Need Water Where Their Roots Are Developing

Tree watering also needs to encourage moisture deeper in the soil. Frequent, short watering can wet only the upper layer, while longer, appropriately spaced watering can support deeper root development when the soil, slope and drainage allow it.

Shrubs Usually Need Their Own Establishment and Maintenance Plan

New shrubs need consistent moisture while roots establish, but their long-term schedule should reflect the mature plant palette. California native and climate-adapted shrubs may perform poorly if they remain on a frequent schedule intended for thirstier plants. Other shrubs may need more regular irrigation during warm, exposed periods.

Groundcovers Often Require More Even, Shallow Distribution

Groundcovers occupy a broad surface area and may have shallower root systems than nearby trees. During establishment, they often need water distributed evenly across the planted area. A few emitters located for trees or large shrubs may leave dry gaps between plants.
As the groundcover fills in, its irrigation can usually be adjusted. That adjustment is much easier when the groundcover has its own valve or compatible zone. Otherwise, reducing its schedule may also reduce water to a tree that still needs a deeper soak.

Mixed Zones Create Predictable Problems

Combining dissimilar plants does not always cause an immediate failure. The problems often appear gradually:

  • A tree receives frequent shallow watering intended for groundcover

  • Low-water shrubs remain too wet because higher-demand plants share the valve

  • Groundcover develops dry patches between widely spaced tree emitters

  • A controller adjustment fixes one area but stresses another

  • Replacement plants are added without reconsidering the original zone design
    These symptoms can look like a controller problem or a plant problem when the real issue is that the zone is being asked to serve incompatible needs.

Separate Zones Improve Troubleshooting and Seasonal Adjustments

A well-organized system makes it easier to respond when conditions change. Tree zones can be expanded as root systems grow. Shrub schedules can be reduced after establishment. Groundcover zones can be fine-tuned for coverage without affecting the entire planting bed.
Separate zones also make maintenance more understandable. If one area is too wet or dry, the contractor can evaluate the valve, emitters and schedule serving that specific plant group. With mixed zones, every correction becomes a compromise.
