Paver Problems Often Begin Below the Surface

When homeowners notice sinking, rocking, spreading, or uneven pavers, the finished paver itself is not always the problem.

Many failures begin underneath or around the pavement.

Here are seven common reasons paver surfaces can develop problems.

1. Poor Subgrade Preparation

The soil beneath the pavement supports everything above it.

If loose, disturbed, saturated, or unstable soil is not properly addressed before the base is installed, settlement may eventually appear at the surface.

The finished pavers can only perform as well as the support underneath them.

2. Inadequate Base Material

Aggregate base provides structural support beneath many traditional paver systems.

Insufficient base depth, unsuitable material, or inconsistent installation can contribute to settlement and movement.

Vehicle-loaded areas such as driveways require different consideration than pedestrian patios and garden walkways.

3. Poor Compaction

Installing aggregate is only part of the process.
