Getting it done
Artistic, one-of-a-kind Backyard Design in North Park,
San Diego (Burlingame Neighborhood)
Do you ever wonder what some people have hidden in their backyard—and what their outdoor space really looks like? In the heart of North Park, within the charming Burlingame neighborhood of San Diego, we had the opportunity to transform a one-of-a-kind vision into a truly artistic and functional landscape design.
This homeowner wanted something quirky, creative, and full of personality—a backyard that reflected her love for collecting unique items from travels, estate sales, and flea markets. She had gathered everything from vintage finds to unusual materials, but wasn’t sure how to bring it all together into a cohesive landscape.
That’s where our team stepped in.
Vision Into Reality
From the moment we walked the property, the vision began to take shape. What started as a simple hand sketch evolved into a fully realized custom landscape design in San Diego, blending artistic expression with practical construction. Every element was carefully planned and executed—from layout to material selection—ensuring the space felt intentional while still embracing its eclectic charm.
We began by creating a custom flagstone pathway, placing each stone piece by piece. Using a blend of Arizona flagstone (buff and tan tones) and quartz stone, we incorporated multiple textures to create movement and visual interest. Each stone was individually set and leveled, with concrete carefully applied beneath and finished with a sand finish, color hardener, and acid wash for a natural, high-end look. Metal gears and other components were also added to add visual interest throughout the entire project, mixing and blending from stone to metal.
Custom Living Wall & Structural Design
One of the standout features of this project is the custom-built retaining and living wall. Designed to serve both structural and aesthetic purposes, the wall was constructed using block, then hand-cut to create integrated planting pockets, giving it a living, organic feel.
The wall cap was formed and poured in place, then finished to match the surrounding concrete elements, creating a seamless, cohesive design. This combination of retaining wall construction and living wall landscaping adds both function and artistic appeal—perfect for modern outdoor living spaces in San Diego.
Irrigation, Planting & Sustainable Landscaping:
To support the unique planting design, we installed a custom irrigation system using Netafim Techline drip irrigation, paired with Hunter Valves for efficient water management. Plants were carefully installed throughout the wall and perimeter, with select species secured and trained to establish properly within vertical planting zones. The landscape was finished with a drought-tolerant plant palette, aligning with water-wise landscaping practices in San Diego, while still enhancing the artistic theme of the space.
Recycling & Sustainable Practices:
Throughout the project, we encountered a significant amount of existing debris and leftover materials from previous ownership. Instead of simply discarding everything, we prioritized recycling and repurposing usable materials, integrating select elements into the design where appropriate. This approach not only reduced waste but also honored the layered history of the property.
A Truly One-of-a-Kind Outdoor Space:
This North Park backyard transformation is a perfect example of how custom landscape design, creative hardscape construction, and personalized outdoor living spaces can come together to create something unforgettable. By blending flagstone installation, decorative concrete, retaining walls, irrigation systems, and artistic design, we delivered a backyard that is both functional and deeply personal.
If you’re looking for a landscape contractor in San Diego who can take your ideas—no matter how unique—and turn them into a fully realized outdoor space, this project is proof that anything is possible with the right vision and execution.
