• They work within the laws and are  responsible for paying federal, state and local taxes.
• They are regulated and can be checked out for any complaints. You have recourse if there are problems.
• They comply to various building codes and generally have higher standards.
  
• Hiring a licensed contractor helps protect you and your property. Licensed contractors must demonstrate a level of skill, competency and financial responsibility.  A licensed contractor works within the laws of the State of California and is more likely to be reputable business that will give your quality work and customer satisfaction. If your contractor is licensed and bonded then you as a homeowner are protected should something go wrong.
• A licensed contractor will break the job into phases and will not ask for all the money up front. Upon completion of each phase a payment will be made.
• Unlicensed contractors can bring your project far more risks than savings. Buyer beware you get what you pay for.
• You are responsible if a unlicensed contractor or crew gets hurt on your property. You will have to pay for the medical bills and damages. 
• Contractors without a license are by law  never to contract for jobs costing over $500 including labor and materials.
