Drought tolerant landscapes do not need as much water once established.  When plants are first installed they do require frequent watering.  Hand watering is not the most effective way to water a yard.  Most people do not have the time or patience to water deeply. Water evaporation  is more likely with surface or hand watering.  An irrigation system allows you to program longer watering times and more consistent schedules.
